My question involves personal property located in the State of: Michigan
An ex-girlfriend and room mate still has a car registered and insured in my name. I purchased the car in the agreement that she would pay me back in payments and I would sign over the title once paid in full, as her credit worthiness would not allow her to do on her own. I have not received the full amount from her and still have the title.
We have since decided to go our separate ways but we continued to work with each other on this car as she has a son that she has partial custody. At the time it only made sense to allow her to continue using the car as it allowed her to provide for her son. Some time has passed and she continually finds herself in financial hardships that would not allow her to pay any money towards the car. We have had intermittent conversations but all communication has ceased. I have made multiple attempt to contact her to no avail. I now know the one place I could find her at her place of employment has let her go. So I no longer know where she is working or where she is living as she has been evicted from her new apartment as well. So I am in a horrible position of having this vehicle out there tied to me and am liable if anything was to happen. I do not want to cancel insurance as the car may still be on the road, and I have made attempts to sign over the title to her multiple times knowing I would just be out the money she owed, but she cannot or could not afford the insurance on her own and kept insuring me that she was working something out. Her phone has also been disconnected so now I have no way of knowing when our next communication will be.
What can I do in order to get this vehicle out of my name? I did not want to file a police report as the vehicle was not technically stolen. I do not want to have it seem like I am attempting to file a false police report in any way.
