My question involves a driver's license issued by the State of: Washington
I had a DUI in 2012 in Washington state. I moved from Washington to TX in 2013, and after completing all ignition interlock requirements, paying all fees, my Washington License was clear(although not valid b/c I needed a drivers test). I went in Sept. of 2013 and got a Texas DL, and surrendered my Washington DL. I have lived in TX ever since with no problems. I was back in WA state for work and got pulled over last week. I was issued a citation for DWLS 3rd degree, for not maintaining a SR-22 with Washington state. I got online and I still have a Washington state drivers license, albeit suspended. I did not know it was possible to have a license in 2 states at the same time. The suspension occurred in June of 2014(it happened because I switched insurance companies, and didn't know i had a Washington DL), a full 9 months after I got a Texas DL. I am really dumbfounded. Why would I attempt, or would it even be legal to have 2 DLs simultaneously? When I got my TX dl i thought i was done with Washington. The DOL website tells me I just need an SR-22 on file and re-take my drivers exam to be valid, and that my license doesn't expire until birthdate in 2016. My TX Dl is valid until birthdate in 2019. Is this a mistake on the part of Washington DOL? I called TX and my DL is valid, so I wasn't operating a vehicle without a valid license, but i was operating it with a suspended Washington DL. The police officer even said he was very confused, and that i should call the DOL and see what Im supposed to do. Should I try to get this dismissed? Or go to mediation, explain the situation and go for a reduced fine? I feel like this is complete BS as I jumped through MANY hoops and spent a lot of money to get my license back. Only to have Washington suspend it almost a year after I moved to another state. TX DPS just acted like Washington DOL were idiots who screwed up and Im on my own. I will try to get it straightened out with WA DOL, but I still have to deal with the ticket. Thanks for any advice.
