Traffic Court Issues: Notice to Appear in Court for Carpool Violation

vendredi 5 septembre 2014

My question involves traffic court in the State of: California

I was in heavy traffic on the freeway, and a car almost hit me moving into my lane, forcing me to go into the carpool lane. I drove a very short distance in the carpool lane, waiting to get back in and not cross the solid double lines. I had been told that if I crossed the double lines, that I could get in additional trouble. I didn't know what to do, as I am very rarely in the carpool lane with a passenger. Of course, a CHP officer sees me, and pulls me over! I tried to explain what happened, and he would not listen to me at all. He told me I could tell it to the court. He did not give me a ticket, but instead gave me a "notice to appear in court". I don't know what to do, other than appear in court. Will I be given a fine in court? If I am found guilty (which seems so unfair), can I ask to do community service in lieu of a fine? Money is so tight for me, and I would be willing to do that, if I had to. I just don't know what to do. I have a clean record, and have never been in trouble before.
