My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: Florida
Stetson University says they mis-billed me a year before I graduated and is now withholding my physical degree until it is paid. I received federal loans to pay the tuition and received refunds for 2 semesters following their billing error. When I applied to graduate, they discovered the error and I paid $75 toward it to get my transcripts (in order to apply for a scholarship). Now the remainder of the debt is being handled by a collection agency. Can the university legally withhold my physical degree, especially when the debt was sold to a collection agency? Is it legal to re-bill a student a year after they've completed a course? Can I take them to court to dispute this debt? Any info regarding an appropriate course of action would be helpful, thanks!
