My question involves criminal law for the state of: Nevada
I received a ticket for minor in possession of alcohol last weekend and had a few questions before I go to my initial court date. I am 18 years old, so I want to do anything possible to keep this off of my record. I have read about diversion programs for first time offenders but I'm not sure of the specifics in Nevada. If Nevada offers a diversion program, how would I go about getting into one? Also, I will be going out of state for college next August so will that affect my ability to complete a diversion program?
Next, my ticket says I have to pay a $500 dollar fine. My parents are making me pay this fine with my own money, so is there any way that I can get the fine reduced in exchange for community service? Will the judge ask me if I would prefer paying or completing community service or will he just sentence me to either?
Finally, if I can't get the charge off my record with a diversion program will I be able to expunge it a year later? If so, how hard is that process and does is cost money?
I would prefer getting the process over with as quickly as possible and without having to pay for a lawyer as I am fronting all costs without my parent's help, but I also want the best possible outcome.
Thank you .
