My question involves criminal law for the state of: Texas
A little over 2 years ago I got into some trouble due to a Domestic Violence Case in Austin, Tx. At the time I was attending school and I did not have time for all of the court proceedings and the case was going to be a flop. It was all a big misunderstanding and my now ex-wife spoke to the prosecution telling them that she was the one that assaulted me and that I never layed a hand on her. So obviously the prosecution was offering me a deal since "they didn't have a case against me and wanted to avoid trial". My council, who was state appointed, advised me to take the deal considering my limited time and resources. So I did. I had 1 and a half years to do 10 counseling sessions with the Veteran Affairs for PTSD. I also had to stay out of trouble for that time and bring them proof of my counseling sessions. I signed a paper saying that I pleaded "no contest" to the charges and I received my deferred prosecution. Well over 2 years have passed and I did about 7 or 8 sessions although I never brought or sent the proof to the court. I received a summons letter in the mail for court next month. My question is what do I expect? Will I be going to prison since I pleaded "no contest"? I'm extremely stressed and anxious about this and I know ultimately it is my fault on so many different levels that I could had prevented this. Also important to note is that I stayed out of trouble and did most of the sessions I just never turned in proof. Should I get a lawyer? I have money now and can afford one. What do I do!?
Thanks ahead of time for any answers.
