My question involves a traffic ticket from the state of: California
Basically: I was coming home from school, going downhill. I was coasting and tapping the brake occasionally, which put me between 37 and 40 the whole way down. I noticed a squad car on the side of the road ahead. I then made further effort to reduce my speed BELOW 35 because my registration is expired, even though it has been paid, the smog check took forever because everything connected to the computer had a problem, so at some point I got a parking ticket for my registration. Due to this, I can't get my tags 'til I pay it, which required me getting a second job because I was basically living hand to mouth on the other one. With two jobs and school, there's no way I can't drive.
At the end, I asked the officer how fast I was going, because I know speedometers can be off by up to 7 mph or so. He said, "You must have been going at least 50 because that's how fast I had to go to catch up to you."
So I said, "Well, my speedometer said I was going 35."
The officer asked me, "Do you think I'm stupid?"
Well, since you don't understand basic physics...If I am traveling 35 mph, and you are traveling 0 mph, and lets say your reaction time is between 3-5 seconds, I've already traveled the approximately 50 feet to the right hand turn. You then have another 5 seconds to check traffic and accelerate to 35 mph; then slow down to make the turn, then accelerate to 35 again. This puts me approximately 150 feet ahead. Without accelerating past 35, there is no way for your car to close the distance to my car. This is simple physics.
So...yes I kind of think you are dumb, officer.
This I did not say; but in court, will his half-assed assessment of my speed stick? Or should I simply request traffic school?
