Hello All,
I will be 62 next year and have a daughter who will have just reached her 8th birthday when I file for early retirement. My younger wife is not employed so I assume that she will receive a benefit as caregiver.
I am getting conflicting information from the people I have spoken to at the Social Security office. One says that the child and caregiver benefit is 50% of my full retirement benefit amount (PIA), up to the maximum family benefit. Another says that they will only receive 50% of my early retirement amount subject to the same maximum family benefit.
I'd appreciate any help you can offer in finding a definitive answer and supporting documentation if possible.
