Thank you for reading this and I hope this doesn't sound too stupid. I married a person 20 years older than I am ..we have 3 minor children. Well my husband now collects social security because he is 62 and needed the income. Surprisingly the Social Security office said that the income would be a bit more than expected because he has 3 minor children (our children). They said the money can be saved for them each ...and they would get the money when they each turn 18, or he can have it now, every month which is $145 per child so apx extra $450 a month. This income (social security retirement benefits) will end when each child is age 18. He decided to take the $450 a month in addition to what he was entitled to based on his income because of the financial situation as of to date. Was this a mistake on SSI's part? Is this standard for persons over 62 years with minor children? I'm wondering if the SSI guy made a mistake? If not a mistake.... if in the future we would like to have them put the money in an account for the kids instead of collecting now can Social Security office make this change? final? Greatly appreciate your input, thank you.
