Changing an Adult's Name: Want Bio Dad Correct on Bc How

samedi 17 janvier 2015

My question involves name change laws in the State of: MS

I was born in MS in 1975; my mom was unmarried when she became pregnant and my father refused to marry her. She married a mutual friend to "give the child a name". She and spouse divorced shortly (within a year) after. Husband actually showed up at court with an attorney to fight the divorce.Judge wasn't prepared to grant divorce because of child being involved and mom filing as "irreconcilable differences". She then testified that husband was not the father listed on bc and therefore was not required to pay child support or have visitation, to which he agreed. I have called the courthouse but this divorce record can not be located, nor was this man ever taken off my birth certificate. Now, approaching age 40, I would like to correct my birth certificate, if for no other than genealogical purposes. My bio father is on board with this and wishes it had been done many years before.

Where do we begin? How can I best do this? I now live in FL, do I need to do something here or will I need to petition there?

Thanks for any help you can give me.
