My question involves small claims court in the state of: New Jersey
My ex-tenants are bringing a frivolous suit against me in small claims court in New Jersey. I live in California. I just received something by regular mail today and the trial/hearing is set for next week! They know that they have no case, and I am assuming they are counting on me not being able to make it to New Jersey (they are right about that). I know that if I do not show, I will lose by default though. What can I do? Is regular mail a proper service? Can I respond to the court by mail? How do they get away with suing people out of state who have no means to defend themselves?
