Repair and Maintenance: Landlord Threw Out Possessions While I Live in Apartment

My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: NH

Hello.

Well, I live in a first floor apartment with one kitchen, one bath, and two bedrooms. Technically, I pay 160/Month for one room, my bedroom. My roomate pays his own deal for one bedroom and his own living room.

The landlord has always entered the apartment without notice, whether it be to collect rent or to talk to one of us. Once, he even opened my bedroom door when he was trying to get a hold of me (I was sleeping and apparently he was knocking and the door "accidentally" opened...)

So, my roomate is pretty filthy...there was quite the mess on the kitchen counters and table, I had only one Skillet and one knife on the counter. My landlord asked me what was going on with the mess after he had come inside to collect rent. I told him the mess wasn't mine.

A week later, I noticed my expensive stainless steel skillet outside in our trash can, so I pulled it out. I didn't realize until after the trash was taken out that my $150 Calphalon santoku knife (chef/butcher by trade) was missing. I messaged him about it and he said "my sincerest apologies, but you said nothing of the mess was yours".

I want DESPERATELY to have him replace this knife or reimburse me for the cost.

Does any of this sound legal? I don't think he had the right to throw away anything unless he has explicit permission.

Thank you for any help anyone has. I don't have many nice things, and he threw out one of them :(
