Hey guys! New to the forum and I was wondering what others would think about my situation so I thought I would share.
First off, I live in Utah, and I'm a roofer. Just your average Joe idiot. So my best friend lost his car key and he called some website to get a locksmith out there. To make a new key for his car they charged him $210.00 and they demanded the cash up front. They paid the dealer or whomever for the 'code' to cut the key. And made a key that wasn't even close to what he originally had, so naturally it didn't fit. Eventually we found the original key and in telling you there's no way this key was even close to fitting. And to keep the story straight this ignition has never ever been changed.
Now my friend is a huge idiot for letting him take off with his money but he did. I called the website for him and they refused to do anything about it. So I went a step further with the manager and claimed I was his 'legal representative.' Insisted on them issuing a partial refund before I take action to make this a legal matter. Now don't get me wrong $210 isn't crap to hire a lawyer over, but I was prepared to spend $1000 to make this company go down because I hate businesses that are cheap and shady like this one.
Here's my point. Who could afford to fight a company like this over so little? Hardly anyone. And I couldn't get anywhere until I was a ' legal rep '. It's illegal to act as a lawyer ( I'm not certain about Utah specifically) but I hear it can be a felony. I never got any benefit but my friend got a partial refund. And from what I understand what I did was illegal.
What do you think? How can people protect themselves from companies that refuse to deliver what is agreed upon? Why is it illegal to take this upon yourself for 0 personal gain, except the satisfaction that things are as they should be?
And finally, do you think my actions were wrong? Because at the risk of going down to jail in flames I'd do it again. I hate companies like that and I'll make a stand against shoddy businesses.

It's Illegal to Protect Your Friends, when It Costs Way Too Much to Hire a Lawyer
