Job Benefits Paying Back a Relocation Package

My question involves business law in the state of: NC

Hello Can anyone shed some light on my situation. I relocated twice for a company within 18 months. the 1st time was from FL to CO. Once I got to Colorado they bumped up my salary from what I signed for in the original offer letter to adjust for the cost of living difference. After 9 months, the CO job ended at no fault of my own and I was given the opportunity to relocate again to their home office in Raleigh NC. I signed another relocation package going from CO to NC. I assumed the same rate of pay would still be honored. I get to NC and the rate of pay was honored and stayed the same as increase from Colorado until 2.5 months into the job in Raleigh. At that point, they took the rate of pay away and put me back to what I originally signed for at the beginning of my employment. The relocation agreement from CO to NC never said anything about changing my salary back to what I originally signed on for at the beginning of my employment. So at that point I had signed a lease on an Apt. knowing I was making the increase given from CO. After 2.5 months the money was taken away. I honored my lease for the apartment for 7 months. Coincidentally, I found another job where my home and family are back in FL. Yes I was commuting back and forth from CO and NC to FL every other weekend. Once the lease was up and I found a job in FL I gave my 2 week notice and left the company in NC. I asked HR if I would have to pay back the money and they told me nothing was said by the owner about repayment. I did the exit interview and still nothing was said about repayment and I did ask if I had to repay and still no answer was given. Today I received a letter from the companies attorneys to repay the amount of relocation. which is 6K. Do I have a case of not paying them back? any help appreciated...
