hi all,
for the last few months i've been creating an app for a business near me. we've operated pretty informally - i make progress in a week, bill them for some hours, they give me a check. there's no contract, i'm not an employee, or anything like that.
we're getting close to releasing the application in their facility, and the business owner mentioned to me that we need to talk about about how we'll handle selling/maintaining/etc the application to other similar businesses.
this sounds great to me - i knew it was coming down the line - apparently down the line is coming up quick. i've had a good relationship with the owner for a number of years, but i'm sure once real money starts being an issue, i shouldn't count on him to have my interests at heart.
i've always been an employee for companies, and not an independent consultant/freelancer/whatever - so this is all brand-new to me. i assume i'll want to talk to a lawyer about details.
thought i'd pop by here and see if anyone could give me a general picture about what sorts of arrangements are possible along these lines. the business owner knows pretty much everybody in his business segment both locally and even nationally. i like the idea of using his resources (much greater than mine) for marketing, meeting potential buyers, etc. - i just want to make sure that every time the application moves, i get a good cut of that movement - i don't want to end up getting frozen out somehow.
any thoughts on what the various sorts of possible arrangements might look like in this kind of situation?
thanks for ideas,
