My question involves paternity law for the State of: Maine
Hello Everybody , I need some legal advice regarding a situation I have gotten myself into. I have been with my current boyfriend for almost 5 years , during a split I found myself pregnant by a guy I had no relationship with. I told him about the baby and he claimed the baby was not his , and that he wanted nothing to do with the baby. My boyfriend and I got back together , I told him about what happened and he told me he wanted to help me raise the baby as his. We didnt hear from the bio dad for the next year. My significant other signed my baby's birth certificate and we continued on with our lives. The bio dad decided to start sending me messages asking questions about the baby , and I told him that he could be in the baby's life as long as it was 100% and not in and out. He chose NOT to be in the child's life , once again. Another few months went by and bio dad came back once again , this time claiming that he wanted rights and would be going to either the court house or DHHS to ask for a paternity test. I was under the assumption that once a father was on the birth certificate , if somebody requested a DNA test , that person would have to pay for it. Anyways , I have no idea what to do. I do admit that having him sign the birth certificate was not the best way to do things, but at the time I thought I was doing what was best for my baby. Please help!!!
