My question involves child support in the State of: Texas.

First of all, forgive me if any relies are snide, snarky, or dismissive. I'm at the point where I am pretty sure no one can help me and no one would want to. I'll spare you the nightmare ex-wife stories, and get down to the issue.

When my child support was set, I was a contractor in the IT industry making pretty good money, so when I was told that I only owed $99 a month due to the temporary nature of my job, I insisted on paying support based on my actual income. It was set at $500 a month. A couple years later, after the internet bubble burst, I was living off of unemployment until that ran out, they took half of that and sent me a bill for the rest. I couldn't find a job, so when unemployment ran out, they sent me a bill for the entire amount. When I got a job delivering pizzas, they went back to taking half and sending me the bill.

I tried finding a lawyer, no one I could find was interested in helping a non-custodial parent with no money. They started talking about putting me in jail, I eventually offered to flag down a cop and turn myself in. I was asked why, and I answered that I would get three meals a day and a lawyer. They stopped threatening me, they did not stop sending me bills.

Flash forward a couple years and I'm back to work. I find out that I am $30,000 in arrears due to principle and interest. I hired a lawyer, he looked over my case, told me he would handle it, and said I did not need to come to court with him. I was told to ay $327 a month, and that everything was taken care of. I was also handed a bunch of paperwork I couldn't make heads or tails of, but I'd hired the man to represent my interests, I could trust him, right?

Flash forward 10 years. I've been making my child support payments like clock work. I never missed a single payment in that time. I've got the records to prove it. Then, I miss one payment And all hell breaks loose. Suddenly they want twice as much and I find there is a hold placed on my license and my registration. I went to the child support office and I was informed that I owed $72,000 apparently the lawyer had arranged to get a temporary reduction in my child support with the balance tacked on at the end and drawing interest. This much the child support office told me and gave me the paperwork for.

I contacted my lawyer. He claims that all he did was have the case moved to Iowa, and that he never once discussed reducing anything.

I can't pay this.

My Fiance is furious and acting like I betrayed her. I just started a new job, and have just moved across the country.

What, if anything can I do?
