Interrogation: How to Handle Interrogation

I am going to be "interviewed" by a detective about a theft. Since I've never experienced this, I don't know how they will treat me. The detective sounded real nice on the phone but I know that's just a front. How is the best way to handle an interrogation in regards to not incriminating myself? I don't have a lawyer at the moment so I will be doing this alone
