Suspension and Revocation: Suspended License, Fta and Warrant

My question involves a driver's license issued by the State of: California

Hello everyone,

Back in July of 2014, I had gotten a 15 day notice that I had to pay off a traffic violation I received before my license was going to be suspended. I sent in the payment via mail, and figured it would have been processed and that license would have been good to go. Fast forward to December, I was pulled over due to modified exhaust. The police officer checked my license #, and told me my license has been suspended since July. I had been given a ticket for driving with a suspended license (No court date was written).

I had left the ticket alone (my fault), and didn't receive any notice in the mail regarding a court date. I live in a unit with open mail boxes lined up with three other units. Some of the neighbors would use our unit numbers on their address as well, so their mail would sometimes merge with ours. With that being said, there was a warrant issued about a month ago. My car was parked outside and when a patrol car came by, they ran my plates and waited for me to come out to my car, arrested me, stayed in holding for an hour, before their superior (judge, or commanding officer?) moved the warrant down to a citation (14601.1(a) VC Misdemeanor).

What would I do in this situation? My court date is on 5/21. Should I hire an attorney for this? Could I go into court earlier than the court date and ask for more information? Any help regarding what I can do would be greatly appreciated!
