My question involves a driver's license issued by the State of: California
Last night I received a collections notice from GC Services Limited Partnership, the known collections agency for the Los Angeles Superior Court.
They claim I owe a little under $1000 for a citation from June of 2009, and that I risk having my license suspended over it.
I have no memory of this citation. In fact, my record's pretty darn good, having been pulled over once in California since getting my license, which was for expired registration. That may be the ONLY possible explanation for what this may be, as it was likely in the year prior to this, but my ex-wife (then non-ex) handled mailing in the payment and proof of correction. As far as I was aware this was fully handled, and I never heard another word about it.
When I looked it up on the Superior Court site, I found NOTHING tied to my ID#. However the ID# listed on the collections notice has one incorrect digit in it, and if I enter THAT into the search site I find the citation it lists, with my name on it, a claimed hold on my license, and this same information, along with a hold. But NO indication of what the violation was or any more useful information. Just court dates and such.
In retrospect, I realize I may have received another notice like this a year or more ago, but mistook it for an unrelated collections notice and scare tactics. That, combined with the 2009 date, and the fact that I renewed my license just two months ago without ANY trouble makes me wonder if I even need to worry about this. I'm afraid if I call the collection agency to ask them for more information, they may locate the error and apply it to my license. And I can't afford this figure right now.
What's my best course of action? How can I get more information on what this is and what my risks are without increasing said risks?
