My question involves a driver's license issued by the State of: California
SWIM got his license suspended for failing to appear and then failing to follow up or pay the fine. I know it was based off a fix-it ticket. The county this took place in was San Francisco, which I hear is strict. He said he never got a letter regarding suspension until afterwards. No warning, nothing. I told him it doesn't matter, that it's his responsibility and that he knew he had this ticket.
The ticket went to collections. The fee is just under $600. They offered him a payment plan, but his license won't be reinstated until it's paid in full. They wouldn't take a settlement either. The court clerk told him once it's in collections there's nothing the courthouse can do. He has to deal directly with the collection agency. Since I use this forum a lot, I figured I'd ask on his behalf...
Obviously, the difference between a $25 fix it ticket and a $600 fine is enormous. We know it was his responsibility to pay on time, so we can hold off on the bashing of his decision skills. I do that enough. lol
Is there anything he can do to reduce the fine?
Is there anything he can do to get collections to take a settlement? Do any hardships count?
Is there any way to waive the DMV's reinstatement fee of $55? (What a ripoff)
Can he apply for a restricted license?
Can he apply for an interim license? I heard it's like an unrestricted license, but I didn't know California had those.
I guess that's it for now. Thanks!
