Termination: Dvro and Shared Legal Custody

My question involves restraining orders in the State of: CA

Almost three years ago my ex-wife was awarded a DVRO against me. When the DVRO was issued, I also lost legal custody of our children. The DVRO is set to expire this summer. We rarely talk, and it's always about the kids when we do, but I fully expect her to try and renew the RO because of the leverage it has afforded her. I still have regular visits with my kids.

I am concerned about some medical and educational decisions she's making about our children and would like to have a say in the important decisions that affect their lives. In other words, I would like shared legal custody restored.

I figure, but I'm not certain, that shared legal custody wouldn't really be possible with a DVRO in place. At the moment, the RO only has provisions for brief and peaceful as required for visitation.

Soon I am requesting an order to clean up some gaps in our visitation schedule and would also like to request shared legal custody at the same time, because the DVRO could make that difficult, I would also like to request that the DVRO be terminated early. My ex will protest on all fronts. She has tried, and failed, to make a big fuss about trivial communication (related to the kids), but I haven't given her any ammunition by violating the RO since it was established.

My questions are: Is shared legal custody possible with a DVRO? Is terminating a DVRO early a feasible request?
