I was recently approved for SSI benefits after being diagnosed with leukemia. I will not start receiving any benefits until September due to the 5 month waiting period. During those 5 months, I decided to create a fundraiser for myself to help me pay for medication, transportation and housing. The fundraiser hasn't raised more than $1000 as of yet, but has a goal of $5000 and is scheduled to end in July. My question is will this fundraiser be qualified as income or resources, which would then effect my benefit amount? Will the fundraiser terminate my benefits or lower the amount received? If so, why and how can this be avoided? Also, I am unemployed at the moment, if that changes anything.
