My question involves education law in the State of: WA
Our school is changing curriculum in the middle of the school year and I'm wondering if that's proper.
They are introducing a Google school program to the students. They sent a paper home for the parents to sign, and are requiring all students to have a gmail account. Since I am a parent who doesn't want my children's information collected by Google, I am against this. The school said that they will give out different assignments for students whose parents don't sign the paperwork, but the assignments my children are doing are much more time consuming. For example, one project is to use a specific font ... my kids can't do that if they are hand writing it. In another example, the teacher made students write down the instructions instead of giving them a printout of it (while the kids with access to Google just had to read it on the screen). In another example, the Google program or app will make a poster for the kids, but my kids need to make the poster with supplies purchased on their own.
I should mention that there are 25 to 30 percent of our rural population who have limited or no access to the internet. My main question is about laws governing fair and equal homework for students in the same class. Someone told me there are laws for this, so I thought I'd ask.
Also, the Google program they are using doesn't collect the student information, but the apps programs the kids are referred to have been known to collect this information. The first assignment asks the kids to use an app.
Here are my questions:
1. Are there any laws against making a district wide curriculum change in the middle of the school year? This includes syllabus and course outline information that parents had to sign approval for at the beginning of the year/semester.
2. Is there a law that addresses homework equality?
3. Isn't there a law that says the curriculum needs to go through an Instructional Materials Committee (this has not, because I am on the committee)?
4. Isn't there a law against Google collecting student information and how can I prove this is being done?
5. Is there some law about inequality of student access within the classroom? For example, some kids have hand held devices that can access the internet, but the other kids are having to do the homework on their home computers.
6. Washington is a state that says education is to be funded at 100%. When the school hands out homework assignments, doesn't that require the parents to pay for the internet? (Remember, some families have no internet).
Thank you for your help.
