Establishing an Order: Does It Matter That I Support My Child Just As Much As the Mother

My question involves child support in the State of: Illinois

When my daughter was born a year ago, the mother and I were not together and I really wasn't in the position of taking care of her on a regular basis, but offered to buy anything the mother needed and still saw her. A couple moths after her birth I was on my feet and started getting her every other weekend. I am currently getting her every other week and sometimes when the mother needs someone to care for her while she's working during the week she has her. I have thought about pursuing a legal custody agreement but felt it was unnecessary, because I am getting my daughter on a regular basis. The mother is currently taking me to court for child support, and I feel that's ridiculous seeing as how I have her just about as much as the mother if not more. Is there any way to avoid this, seeing as how I support my child already.
