Federal Taxes: Who Claims Minor Child on Income Tax

samedi 25 octobre 2014

My 7 year old granddaughter has lived in my and my husbands home since mid may and also lived here part time at least 3 nights and days a week before full time starting in may..Dad was given Primary residential custody in Sept. 2014..Son is disabled and only receives S.S. I. and he lives with us also. Ex daughter in law only worked for 3 months in 2014...

Neither parent has given any money for granddaughters support we pay all for her.Housing, food, clothing, ect. When she did stay with mom, moms apartment was paid for by her dad, us and local charities. She lost her rent and now lives with boy friend and for 2 months CPS stepped in and only allowed supervised visitation. Are we allowed to claim 7 year old granddaughter on our income tax? Son can not file income tax and child credit as he only receives S.S. I. Or can he file with just S.S.I. and get the earned child credit?

Mom can file as she did work for 3 months this year and claim earned income credit for child. But she only has visitation no over nights...Do we have to have her permission to claim child on our income tax filing this year or can we just claim her as we are the only people financially supporting her. Mom was not ordered to pay any child support..Granddaughter will continue to live with us and her dad who lives here also.
